Visual Counterpoint, 2001
Genre: Minimalist
Director: Alaric S. Rocha
DP: Alaric S. Rocha
Music: Steve Riech
Editor: Alaric S. Rocha
Starring: Marco Albonetti
TRT: 11:47
Commissioned by Saxophonist Marco Albonetti. This video was used to accompany him as he played saxophone with the remaining saxophone parts prerecorded. I used focus to visually represent dynamics and colors to represent general pitch area. Riech's idea with this (and many of his pieces) was the constant repitition of short sounds or rhythms. I mimicked this idea visually using just three frames of static. At first glance it looks like any other static, but soon one can begin to see different partterns and new images. There is always something new discovered. Just as in Reich's music.
